Medical Physics Program

1. Objective

To provide course work and practical training for graduate students seeking a professional career as clinical medical physicists in radiation oncology, diagnostic radiology, or nuclear medicine.

5. Program Prerequisites

Students should have a degree in physics or a degree in engineering or other area of physical science with physics education equivalent to a minor in physics (including at least three upper level undergraduate physics courses or equivalent required for a physics major).

The above-mentioned upper level undergraduate physics courses include Electromagnetics, Theoretical Mechanics, Quantum Physics, Modern Physics, Thermal Physics, Optics and other courses approved by this program.

6. Required Course Hours

1. Courses required by the Master’s Program of MIRS: Radiation and Nuclear Physics (3 hrs), Radiological Anatomy and Physiology (2 hrs), Seminar (4 hrs), Thesis (6 hrs).
2. Courses required by this program: Radiotherapy Physics (3 hrs), Diagnostic Imaging Physics (3 hrs), Physics and Pharmaceuticals in Nuclear Medicine (3hrs), Medical Health Physics (3 hrs), Medical Radiation Dosimetry (3 hrs), Radiobiology (3 hrs), Biostatistics (3 hrs), Scientific ethics and paper writing (2 hrs).
3. Required elective courses (minimum one elective): Radiotherapy Physics Lab (2 hrs), Diagnostic Imaging Physics Lab (2 hrs).
4. Elective courses: Clinical Practicum of Medical Physics in Radiotherapy (9 hrs), Clinical Practicum of Medical Physics in Diagnostic Imaging (9 hrs), Radiation Detection and Measurement (3 hrs), Medical Image Processing (3 hrs).
